You are cordially invited to join Children’s Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman and Los Angeles’s finest for the 26th Annual Beat the Odds Awards Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. The purpose of the gala is to recognize and commemorate the strength and resilience that our honorees have demonstrated both inside and outside of the classroom. We also want to remind celebrities, public officials and change-makers in Los Angeles about the tremendous need in their communities and to inspire them to take action.
Seating is limited so purchase your tickets today to reserve your place! Tickets start at just $500 - and all proceeds will help support our Beat the Odds scholarship program and enable us to our expand our relentless efforts to lift up the voices of children all across the state. If you can’t attend on the day of the event, we ask that you consider making an In-Spirit Donation to support our honorees and the thousands more from our city who are beating the odds every day.
Our 2016 CDF Beat the Odds honorees are the embodiment of strength, determination, and resilience. Each of these students has faced tremendous hardships on the road to college and survived childhoods marked by homelessness, abuse, abandonment, and loss. Yet, regardless of what life has thrown at them, they all have remained steadfast in their commitment to excellence - both inside and out of the classroom.
"My goal in life has been to prove to everyone that you can beat the odds regardless of what has happened in your past. I may be half blind, but I see the world more fully than I ever have."
"I am proud to share that through hard work, commitment, perseverance and support from many adults in my life I have begun to break through the social barriers that have been placed upon me."
"I am thankful for where I am today and for the opportunity to steer my life around. This scholarship has provided me with a platform to share my story with individuals with similar struggles."
"I continue to step up every day in all the ways that are within my scope as a young man. I am committed to beating the odds for myself, my family and my community!"
