Beat the Odds - Nominate a Student

Know an amazing student? We want to know that student, too. If you are a teacher, counselor, caseworker, community based organization, or adult located in the greater Los Angeles County, you are invited to nominate an outstanding young person for the Beat the Odds Scholarship program!

The Basics

The Children’s Defense Fund’s Beat the Odds Scholarship program recognizes outstanding young people who have overcome adversity to excel in school and as leaders in their communities.

Ten Los Angeles high school sophomores will be selected to participate in the program. Each awardee will receive up to $10,000 in scholarship money and have access to a suite of academic and career readiness opportunities, as well as leadership and life skills development to support them as they transition from high school to college and beyond, including:

  • SAT preparation courses from 100Points;
  • one-on-one college counseling;
  • college tours;
  • leadership and life skills development;
  • one-on-one tutoring;
  • and internship placement opportunities.

Additionally, five scholars will be selected from the ten recipients to receive special recognition at the 26th Annual Beat the Odds Awards ceremony and have their life story documented by a professional filmmaker.
