Janet Robles

2008 Beat the Odds Honoree

In a life filled with instability, Janet Robles learned to find comfort in books at an early age. Her family struggled with little money, and Janet was constantly uprooted from her home. At each new school, Janet was teased by her classmates. During the sixth grade her parents decided to move to Tijuana to get away from the dangers of Los Angeles. Just as Janet had adjusted to her new life, her parents split up. Then her father died in a tragic car accident. Janet feels that she lost a part of herself that day. She knows how hard her mother works to support the family; she also knows that the best way to help her family is to pursue her own educational goals. Just before her 8th grade school year, Janet moved away from her mother and brothers to live with her extended family so she could attend school in California. Despite not being with her family, Janet has excelled in her studies, maintaining an overall GPA of 4.03. She is involved in several school clubs and activities including MEChA, Key Club, California Scholarship Federation, an internship class, and the National Honor Society where she serves as secretary. Janet’s internship teacher describes her by saying, “Distinctive to Janet is her great desire to succeed in everything she does with a high degree of personal integrity and responsibility.” Janet plans to pursue a degree in psychology or speech pathology. It is with great admiration that the Children’s Defense Fund recognizes Janet Robles as a 2008 Beat the Odds Award recipient.
