Fabricio Segovia

2004 Beat the Odds Honoree

Ranked second in his class of 713 students, Fabricio is both a leader inside and outside the classroom. While maintaining a 4.0 grade point average with a full course load of advanced placement classes, Fabricio is very active in school leadership, community service, and an array of other activities. He is class president and president of MESA, a science club through California State University, Long Beach. Because of his outstanding leadership, he will be representing his school this summer at the prestigious National Student Leadership Conference at Stanford.

A sincere, honest and compassionate young man who is always willing to lend a hand to others, Fabricio’s values and strong character inform all that he does in life. Twice a week before school he can be found volunteering at a local convalescent home. Participating in community service-whether it is tutoring a student or visiting with elderly residents of the home - has been an integral part of his life. What is remarkable about this young man is that even though he has been in the foster care system since the age of six, Fabricio’s positive outlook on life has never wavered. Despite a tumultuous upbringing and living in many different foster settings, Fabricio has been determined not to let any hardships stand in the way of his dreams.

The Children’s Defense Fund is inspired by his perseverance and positive spirit, and is pleased to recognize Fabricio as a 2004 Beat the Odds® honoree.
