Dennis Denman

2006 Beat the Odds Honoree

Dennis Denman exudes a special confidence rare for a 16 year old. Dennis was raised by his grandmother, a stoic woman who taught Dennis to survive. Together, Dennis and his grandmother overcame heartache and struggles brought on by a family battling drug addictions and separation. When his grandmother died in 2004, Aunt B, Dennis’ grandmother’s sister, stepped in to become his primary caregiver. In a neighborhood plagued with gangs and drugs, his aunt and his grandmother worked hard to keep him focused on his studies. Dennis says of his grandmother, “I know she is looking down smiling at me. I am becoming a survivor, like her.” Because of their care and dedication, Dennis has been able to develop into an amazing leader, with a demonstrated commitment to helping others. He is the 11th grade Class President, Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps JROTC and also serves in several other clubs at Crenshaw High School. Dennis’ counselor stated that she has no doubt that Dennis “will continue to be successful at the collegiate level in his academic, personal and social affairs.” The Children’s Defense Fund takes great pride in honoring Dennis as a 2006 CDF Beat the Odds® recipient.
