2016 Beat the Odds Honoree

Alexandra Flores grew up in a two-parent home for most of her young life. Her father, who was not a citizen, began abusing drugs and was eventually deported. Without her father's physical presence and financial contribution, the Flores family fell apart. Alexandra and her family of six were evicted from their longtime home, leaving them homeless. Their circumstances broke most of them apart, but 11-year-old Alexandra and her mother managed to stay together.

With the full emotional and financial weight of the family on her shoulders, Alexandra's mom fell into a deep depression. Alexandra watched her mother go from being a vibrant and engaging woman to someone who barely spoke. After moving from place to place, the two found some stability when they moved into a friend's garage.

The unusual living situation caused daily challenges. The lighting in the garage made it difficult for Alexandra to read and use a computer for homework.

Alexandra was determined to succeed and overcome what might have caused many others to give up. Despite these challenges, Alexandra looks forward to going to college, to become a child advocate and positive role model in her community.

Alexandra works several odd jobs to help support her family, while still managing to keep her grades up. Despite these challenges, Alexandra looks forward to going to college, to become a child advocate and positive role model in her community.
