Statement from Kim Brettschneider, State Coordinator of Children’s Defense Fund- California, in response to the tragic gun violence at Taft Union High School this morning:

“What is it going to take to stop the craziness of gun violence in this country when a child or teen is shot by a gun every 30 minutes? What is it going to take to make the politicians stand up and put sensible gun laws in place so we don’t have to watch in horror as more of our children and teens are shot with guns in their schools? Our hearts go out to the victims of gun violence today at Taft Union High School, in the Bakersfield area, as once again we are reminded that there is no safe harbor for our children. In the wake of the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School and other tragedies across the country, how many children have to die or be injured before we stop the proliferation of guns in our nation?  We can’t just talk about it and then do nothing. This latest tragedy is no fluke. It is another instance of an epidemic of gun violence that has gripped our nation, and a result of the senseless, immoral neglect of all of us as a nation to fail to protect children instead of guns and to speak out against the pervasive culture of violence. It is up to us to stop these preventable tragedies.”
