Alex Johnson, Executive Director of the Children’s Defense Fund - California, released the following statement in response to today’s approval to create a civilian oversight commission by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors:

“I applaud the members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for their wisdom and foresight in moving forward with the establishment of a permanent civilian oversight commission for the Sheriff’s Department. The approval of today’s motion by Supervisor’s Mark Ridley-Thomas and Hilda Solis represents a critical step forward in rebuilding the trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve. The issue of community accountability and transparency has become even more important in the wake of the tragic and unjust deaths of Michael Brown, Eric Garner, and Ezell Ford, along with countless others. Such a commission will not only serve to root out misconduct and abuse in the patrol units and county jail facilities before it becomes a problem; it will also provide the public with a much-needed forum to voice their concerns. Constitutional policing is fundamental to public safety - and we commend Sheriff Jim McDonnell on his support for the commission and look forward to its implementation in Los Angeles County.”
