California’s Children Need a Budget that Repairs the State’s Tattered Safety Net and Restores Cuts to Children’s Programs

In response to Governor Brown’s 2013-14 budget proposal released today, Kim Brettschneider, State Coordinator of Children’s Defense Fund-California, issued this statement:

“While California’s fiscal outlook is improving, many of the state’s children and families continue to struggle in the wake of the economic downturn and devastating budget cuts over the past five years to programs serving our most vulnerable children. Though the Governor’s budget does not include significant cuts to education, health care, and social services like we have seen in recent years, the budget proposal fails to restore severe cuts to children’s programs or start the process of repairing the state’s tattered safety net. We urge the Governor and the Legislature to develop a final budget that reinvests in California’s children to promote economic growth and secure the future of our state.”

Children's Defense Fund-California is the California office of the Children's Defense Fund, a non-profit child advocacy organization that has worked relentlessly for nearly 40 years to ensure a level playing field for all children. The Children’s Defense Fund champions policies and programs that lift children out of poverty, protect them from abuse and neglect, and ensure their access to health care, a quality education, and a moral and spiritual foundation.
