December 1, 2016
Our five 2016 scholarship honorees are readying for one of their biggest evenings when they will be publicly recognized in front of family, friends, and celebrities alike for overcoming the obstacles in their lives and beating the odds.
For the past several months, the students have been preparing their speeches and filming their personal stories to be debuted Dec. 1 at the 2016 Beat the Odds® Gala at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
This year’s honorees are: Jose Aceves, Alexandra Flores, Cierra Gunderson, Destiny Novillo, and Florencia Valenzuela.
Although prepping for the big day compounds an already busy time with looming college application and financial aid deadlines and upcoming mid-year finals, the students are grateful for the support that CDF-CA has offered them.
The Beat the Odds program offers more than a financial scholarship. For the past 18 months, each student has received individualized academic and career counseling, met with college representatives, received assistance with the financial aid and college application process, and attended leadership and life-skills development workshops.
Through mentorship, internship placements and CDF-CA’s own programs and a vast network of support, Beat the Odds program builds conscious leaders who are aware of the political, economic, and social factors that affect their communities.
