In preparation for health coverage open enrollment, we partnered with local agencies on a special training series to prepare school administrations in South Los Angeles to educate parents about the health care programs available to their children through the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
In addition to receiving important information on coverage options, participants in the training also had the opportunity share effective health outreach and enrollment strategies, brainstorm solutions to common health care enrollment obstacles, and learn best practices for building and strengthening school-community partnerships.
Health care is essential to learning and school performance; and when children are covered, they miss fewer days of school due to illness and come to school better prepared to learn. For the past three years, we have partnered with school districts in Los Angeles County and The School Superintendents Association to identify their uninsured children through school enrollment forms and connect them with free or low-cost health care options.
Funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and the Kaiser Permanente, Downey Regional Medical Center, the project builds upon CDF's nationally recognized, best practice model of partnering with local schools to link uninsured children with the health coverage they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
