Closing the Opportunity Gap

November 11, 2016

The 2016 National Observance of Children’s Sabbaths® Celebration, “Children of Promise: Closing Opportunity Gaps” was held October 21-23 and focused on closing opportunity gaps due to poverty and lack of access to high-quality early childhood development and a high-quality education so that every child can reach their God-given potential.

Thousands of churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and other faith communities across the country joined in this celebration by holding a community-wide interfaith special worship service or a special service, additional educational programs, and advocacy activities to engage people of faith in improving the lives of children and their families in your community, state and our nation.

“Truly each and every one of our children is a child of promise, born with the potential to achieve and become all they are meant to be,” CDF Founder Marian Wright Edelman said in a letter about 2016 Children’s Sabbath. “But that inborn promise cannot be fully realized for millions of our children because of the deprivation, pitfalls, and obstacles put in their way.”

In order to make a difference, we need to stand tall within our communities and push our nation to keep our promises of love and justice, equality, and dignity for all.
