On Dec. 10, Children’s Defense Fund – California kicked off its CDF Freedom Schools® Parent Engagement Institute (Institute) with an informational meeting in Lynwood.
The aim of the Institute is to help parents start as early as their child’s infancy to create a mindset, expectation and a home culture that makes it clear college is a live and viable goal for their children. Via the Institute’s curriculum parents will increase capacity to support their children’s academic development, strengthen communication and interaction, and to hone in on their leadership skills to effectively engage in their children’s education. This curriculum is creating a pathway to a college graduate. The pathway places a strong emphasis on language and literacy because they are the key to nearly every academic endeavor scholars will be expected to make in school. More than 40 parents of CDF Freedom Schools scholars attended the meeting and expressed excitement about the Institute set to officially launch in January. Parents shared their needs and desires for engagement and also had the opportunity to register.
The Institute will provide parents the opportunity and space for social interaction and will follow a concentrated, research-based curriculum that provides parents with a home-based toolkit and other resources developed in partnership with Dr. Sylvia Rousseau, a parent, grandparent, educator, expert in clinical education and researcher in organizing urban schools for learning.
During the meeting, Dr. Rousseau reminded parents that their most valuable asset is their love for their children and their desire to see them succeed.
The Institute, in partnership with Read Lead and Success In Challenges, will initially only serve parents in the Lynwood, Compton and Long Beach areas.
