SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KCBS) - San Francisco supervisors, public health officials and children's advocates are concerned about the new state budget.
A public hearing gave advocates an opportunity to consider the impact of deep cuts to California's Healthy Families program.
The hearing was called by Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, who is alarmed by a $194 million cut to the program that targets working families. "We simply cannot go backward but that's exactly what these state budget cuts could mean," she said.
Cliff Sarkin with Children's Defense Fund California spoke about the consequences of a badly under-funded Healthy Families Program. "Now for the first time ever we're keeping kids, eligible kids, out of the program.”
San Francisco remains committed to universal healthcare for children and youth and guaranteed health insurance for every child. "They can get all of their immunizations and all of the preventive care that we know that kids need, even things like eyeglasses that are covered by Healthy Families," explained Francis Culp with San Francisco's Department of Public Health
