Lorena Sánchez develops, oversees and helps implement programs and projects that support CDF's vision and short- and long-term plans.
While managing special projects and initiatives, Lorena also manages the development, implementation and expansion of the Children's Defense Fund's Parent Engagement Institute, a program designed to equip CDF-CA's Freedom School Program® partners with the tools to effectively engage parents in supporting their children's learning and development at home. The Institute's guiding principles and asset-based curriculum is designed to empower parents to become a strong and effective voice and drivers of change on behalf of children's issues.
Lorena has also led CDF's school-based health outreach initiative that provided federal, state and local technical assistance to five Los Angeles school districts to systematically transform administrative functions and policies impacting school health. The initiative linked schools with health partners in their communities and increased the number of hard-to-reach uninsured children who obtained access to health coverage.
Prior to joining CDF, Lorena was a Senior Associate at Diverse Strategies for Organizing Inc. where she managed special projects for the Los Angeles Community College District, the City of Los Angeles, SEIU-UHW, the Nielsen Company, and PhRMA. Additionally, she served as Field Deputy for Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and also served as a student worker for retired State Senator Richard Polanco. Lorena has worked in various capacities at the City of Huntington Park's Community Planning Department, the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles, and for non-profit organizations serving low-income communities.
Lorena graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles.
